About us
The Institute for Applied Informatics asociation (InfAI-Institut für Angewandte Informatik e.V.) was founded in 2006 to promote science and research in the areas of Computer Science and Information Systems. Since 2008 the institute has been a state-approved affiliated institute of the University of Leipzig according to §95, Saxonian university law. Ever since, InFAI has become one of the universities’ largest research institutes with strong external funding.
The institutes’ 130 employees generated annual revenue of about 5 Mio. Euro and conduct national and international, innovative as well as interdisciplinary research and industry projects. The project focuses on the areas big data/smart data, logistics, analytics and service research. In these areas InfAI cooperates with renowned companies such as Siemens, Daimler, BMW, SAP, T-Systems, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG, Software AG, ERGO Insurance Group and Mercateo. For instance, we develop in cooperation with a client an IT platform for the combination of power producers in the area of renewable energy, to optimize logistics processes and make them more economic using new technologies (such as RFID, Bluetooth LE and NFC).
InfAI sees its role as transfer institute and innovation driver of solutions based on current technologies. The technologies are developed within national and international research projects or as contract research for various target industries, afterwards brought to product maturity in partnership with companies in order to make them available for use. Such an integrated value chain makes innovations usable for companies and inherent risks manageable. The institute’s strategic goal is to further expand its role. To this end, the institute plans to create an innovation incubator that allows transferring innovative research results and technologies to companies through defined processes and making them marketable by strategic, personnel and financial support. That such an incubator is received well and strengthens the business location of Leipzig is demonstrated by the successful establishment of ICT businesses in Leipzig, which base their business model on technologies of InfAI.
InfAI regularly organizes conferences, workshops, conventions and symposia to enhance the exchange among excellent scientists as well as the exchange between science and economy. These events include the annual Leipzig Days of Applied Informatics, Energy Eco Systems, Semantics, InnoLogist etc.
The institute benefits from a continuously growing team of scientific employees and software developers on the one hand and consultants and trainers with industry experience on the other. With this, the institute provides a value chain for professional services: from developing innovative research results to the transfer to the economy. Therefore, InfAI can act flexibly and professionally on the market.
